Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Surgery
  • Equine Podiatry
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Keratomas are benign equine hoof tumors.
  • Diagnosis and treatment of keratomas can be challenging.
  • Previous treatments often fail.

Observation:

  • Seven horses with keratomas were evaluated.
  • Keratomas were located beneath the hoof wall or sole.
  • Radiographs showed defects in the third phalanx in some cases.

Findings:

  • Surgical excision was performed via hoof wall resection or sole excavation.
  • Microscopic examination confirmed characteristic squamous epithelial cells and keratin.
  • Concurrent infection was often present.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Surgical excision is an effective treatment for equine keratomas.
  • Complete healing and soundness were achieved in most horses post-surgery.
  • Recurrence was not observed within one year.
