Angle Closure Glaucoma: Treatment01:28

Angle Closure Glaucoma: Treatment

1.0K
Angle-closure glaucoma, or closed-angle glaucoma, is an eye condition where the iris bulges out and blocks the iridocorneal angle, resulting in a buildup of aqueous humor and increased intraocular pressure. Immediate medical attention is necessary due to the sudden onset of symptoms. The treatment for angle-closure glaucoma includes short-term and long-term approaches. Short-term treatment involves using eye drops like pilocarpine to lower intraocular pressure by increasing aqueous humor...

Open Angle Glaucoma: Treatment

896
In open-angle glaucoma, the iridocorneal angle remains open, but the trabecular meshwork becomes stiff, slowing down the outflow of aqueous humor. This causes a buildup of aqueous humor in the anterior chamber, leading to a sudden increase in intraocular pressure. The treatment for open-angle glaucoma focuses on reducing the elevated intraocular pressure by either decreasing the secretion of aqueous humor or increasing its outflow.
Drugs such as carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, α2- and...

Glaucoma: Overview

1.1K
Glaucoma is an eye condition characterized by increased intraocular pressure that damages the retina and optic nerve, leading to irreversible blindness if left untreated. The human eye has various components, including the cornea, iris, pupil, lens, and optic nerve. Aqueous humor is secreted by the epithelium of the ciliary body in the posterior chamber and flows through the trabecular meshwork and canal of Schlemm, maintaining normal intraocular pressure. The trabecular meshwork and the canal...

Summary

Topical difluprednate 0.05% effectively closed full-thickness macular holes in four patients, improving visual acuity within 12 weeks. Some patients experienced increased intraocular pressure as a side effect.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Retinal Diseases
  • Pharmacological Treatments

Background:

  • Full-thickness macular holes can lead to significant vision loss.
  • Current treatments for macular holes have varying success rates and potential complications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of topical difluprednate 0.05% in achieving closure of full-thickness macular holes.
  • To assess visual acuity outcomes and intraocular pressure changes associated with difluprednate treatment.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective chart review of 4 patients with full-thickness macular holes.
  • Treatment involved topical difluprednate 0.05% drops administered four times daily for at least 12 weeks.
  • Outcomes assessed via optical coherence tomography, visual acuity measurements, and intraocular pressure monitoring.

Main Results:

  • Macular hole closure was achieved in all 4 patients within 12 weeks.
  • The average time to macular hole closure was 5 weeks.
  • Visual acuity improved from an average of 20/42 at baseline to 20/26 post-treatment.
  • Two patients experienced elevated intraocular pressure.

Conclusions:

  • Topical difluprednate 0.05% demonstrated effectiveness in promoting macular hole closure.
  • The treatment was associated with reduced macular edema and improved visual acuity.
  • Potential side effects include increased intraocular pressure, necessitating monitoring.
