Self-harm deaths doubled in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) between 1990 and 2015. Despite this, war-related deaths increased tenfold, overshadowing suicide prevention efforts in the region.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Epidemiology
- International Health
Background:
- The World Health Organization Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) comprises 22 countries.
- Self-harm mortality has significantly increased in the EMR between 1990 and 2015.
- High rates of death from war and legal interventions may divert attention from suicide prevention.
Purpose of the Study:
- To highlight the rise in self-harm deaths within the EMR.
- To contextualize suicide prevention challenges amidst regional conflicts.
- To advocate for the development and implementation of suicide prevention strategies.
Main Methods:
- Analysis of Global Burden of Disease (GBD) data.
- Comparative analysis of mortality trends (self-harm vs. war/legal interventions).
Main Results:
- A 100% increase in deaths from self-harm in the EMR from 1990 to 2015.
- A 1027% increase in deaths due to war and legal interventions during the same period.
- Limited prioritization and absence of formal suicide prevention strategies in EMR countries.
Conclusions:
- Despite rising self-harm rates, conflict-related deaths dominate mortality statistics in the EMR.
- The current focus on conflict may hinder the development of essential suicide prevention programs.
- Urgent need to develop and implement suicide prevention strategies in the EMR, irrespective of ongoing stability challenges.
