Background:

  • Malignant otitis externa (MOE) is an aggressive infection of the external ear canal.
  • MOE can invade the temporal bone, leading to severe complications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between clinical features and treatment outcomes in MOE patients.
  • To identify factors predicting prolonged treatment and disease recurrence.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective descriptive study analyzing patient data from 2008-2018.
  • Evaluation of 30 patients diagnosed with malignant otitis externa.

Main Results:

  • Diabetes mellitus was the most common comorbidity (76%).
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the most frequent pathogen (47%).
  • Facial nerve palsy and temporal bone erosion correlated with longer treatment durations and higher recurrence rates.

Conclusions:

  • Cranial nerve involvement, temporal bone erosion, and comorbidities are associated with prolonged treatment and adverse prognosis.
  • Prompt diagnosis and aggressive treatment are vital for improved outcomes in MOE patients.
