Background:

Competency-based medical education programs are increasingly adopted globally.
Competence Committees require effective visualization of learner assessment data for decision support.
Dashboards are established decision support tools in various fields.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify the specific data, analytics, and visualization needs of a Competence Committee within an emergency medicine residency program.
To develop and evaluate a dashboard that addresses these identified needs.

Main Methods:

A design-based research approach was employed at the University of Saskatchewan's emergency medicine residency program.
Qualitative data were gathered through focus groups, interviews, and observation of Competence Committee meetings.
Thematic analysis of qualitative data informed the dashboard's design and identified key Competence Committee requirements.

Main Results:

Four primary Competence Committee needs were identified: exploring workplace-based assessment data, exploring other assessment data, understanding data context, and ensuring data security.
These needs were translated into specific dashboard elements and visualizations.
The developed dashboard incorporates these elements to meet the identified needs.

Conclusions:

This research addresses practical challenges in supporting data-driven decisions for Competence Committees.
The findings and developed dashboard can inform the creation of similar tools for broader educational programs, institutions, and learner management systems.
