Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.

Background:

Delays in diagnosing autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are common.
Early detection and intervention are crucial for children with ASD.
Open communication between parents and providers is vital for timely ASD diagnosis.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore parents' experiences communicating early ASD concerns with primary care providers.
To identify strategies for improving conversations and shared decision-making in early ASD detection.

Main Methods:

Qualitative study using focus groups.
Conducted with 23 parents of children under 8 years old diagnosed with ASD.
Analyzed parent experiences through iterative, systematic thematic analysis.

Main Results:

Identified eight key themes in parent-provider communication regarding early ASD concerns.
Highlighted parental experiences with concern expression, information seeking, and barriers to action.
Results indicate a need for enhanced shared decision-making and process improvements.

Conclusions:

Primary care providers are essential in guiding parents through ASD concerns and referrals.
Strategies include prompt responses, shared decision-making, and ongoing support.
Improving communication facilitates better navigation of the service system for families.
