Transcriptomic data helps refining classification of pulmonary carcinoid tumors with increased mitotic counts

Summary
Pulmonary neuroendocrine tumor classification is challenging for borderline cases. This study suggests tumors with carcinoid features and low mitotic counts should be classified as carcinoids, not large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC).

Background:
- Pulmonary neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are WHO-classified into typical/atypical carcinoids, large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC), and small cell lung cancer (SCLC).

Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the clinicopathological and transcriptomic profiles of pulmonary neuroendocrine tumors, particularly those in the diagnostic gray zone.

- Pulmonary neuroendocrine tumors with carcinoid-like features and mitotic counts <20/mm² should be considered pulmonary carcinoids, not LCNEC.
