A Paralyzing Case of Myalgias

Severe muscle pain after anesthesia may be caused by succinylcholine. This condition, known as post-operative myalgia, can be debilitating but is temporary and resolves on its own.

- Myalgia (muscle pain) is a common symptom with a broad differential diagnosis.
- Succinylcholine, a neuromuscular blocking agent, is frequently used in anesthesia for rapid sequence intubation and short procedures.
Observation:
- A 70-year-old male presented with acute, severe diffuse myalgia and immobility two days post-lymph node biopsy under general anesthesia.
- Other potential causes of myalgia were ruled out through comprehensive evaluation.
Findings:
- The patient was diagnosed with presumed succinylcholine-induced myalgias.
- Succinylcholine causes prolonged neuromuscular junction depolarization and muscle fasciculations, potentially leading to post-operative myalgias (POM).
Implications:
- Succinylcholine-induced myalgia is a self-limited but potentially severe condition.
- Recognition of this adverse effect can prevent unnecessary investigations and reduce healthcare costs.
