  • Participants perceived value in forming distinct impressions of peers through AV discussions.
  • Students reported feelings of distress and identified technology and time constraints as significant barriers.
  • The use of AV discussion formats was not universally supported by participants.

Conclusions:

  • Audio-video discussion formats may not be suitable for all online course discussions.
  • Consideration should be given to limiting AV format use to specific, select discussion forums.
  • Further research is needed to optimize the use of AV technology in online nursing education.
