The new hybrid robotic system for intraoperative (IO) teleneuropathology shows improved diagnostic concordance compared to traditional methods. This advancement enhances the effectiveness of remote consultations in neuropathology.
Area of Science:
- Neuropathology
- Medical Technology
- Digital Pathology
Background:
- Teleneuropathology has evolved over 17 years from static to dynamic robotic microscopy.
- Historically, older teleneuropathology systems had a 19.7% deferral rate and 81% concordance.
- A recent upgrade to hybrid robotic devices necessitated an evaluation of their impact.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the impact of newer hybrid robotic devices on deferral and concordance rates in intraoperative (IO) teleneuropathology.
- To compare the effectiveness of modern teleneuropathology with conventional glass slide examination.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional comparative study was conducted.
- Intraoperative (IO) teleneuropathology cases (193) using Aperio LV1 scanners were compared to conventional glass slide consultations (310).
- Deferral and concordance rates were compared to final histopathological diagnoses.
Main Results:
- The deferral rate for IO teleneuropathology was 26%, compared to 24.24% for conventional slides (P=0.58).
- The concordance rate for teleneuropathology was 93.94%, higher than the 89.09% for conventional slides (P=0.047).
Conclusions:
- The new hybrid robotic device is as effective as conventional glass slide interpretation for IO teleneuropathology.
- The study observed a marked improvement in the concordance rate with the new hybrid scanner.
- The new system demonstrates the effectiveness of advanced technology in improving diagnostic accuracy for remote consultations.
