Autism Spectrum Disorder01:19

Autism Spectrum Disorder

792
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Auditory Pathway01:15

Auditory Pathway

6.8K
Auditory pathways constitute the complex neural circuits responsible for transmitting and interpreting auditory information from the peripheral auditory system to the brain. Sound waves are initially captured by the outer ear, funneled through the ear canal, and reach the tympanic membrane (eardrum). These vibrations are transmitted via the middle ear's ossicles to the inner ear's cochlea.
When viewed cross-sectionally, the cochlea reveals the scala vestibuli and scala tympani flanking...

Cognitive Development During Adolescence01:18

Cognitive Development During Adolescence

377
During adolescence, individuals experience significant cognitive development that enhances their understanding of others' emotions and thoughts, known as cognitive empathy. This period is marked by an increased ability to adapt to others' perspectives and a more nuanced understanding of others' mental states, a skill that is foundational for social problem-solving and conflict avoidance. The development of cognitive empathy relies heavily on the theory of mind — the...

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

622
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It affects approximately 5-8% of children globally, with around 60-70% of cases persisting into adulthood. ADHD has significant implications for educational attainment, social interactions, and occupational success.
Diagnostic Criteria and Symptoms
To diagnose ADHD, symptoms must manifest before age 12 and be evident across multiple settings....

Hearing01:31

Hearing

56.1K
When we hear a sound, our nervous system is detecting sound waves—pressure waves of mechanical energy traveling through a medium. The frequency of the wave is perceived as pitch, while the amplitude is perceived as loudness.

Information Processing Approach

391
The information-processing theory of cognitive development centers on fundamental mental processes, including attention, memory, and problem-solving skills. Researchers in this field examine how cognitive abilities, such as working memory, evolve and influence children's overall development. Studies indicate that children with stronger working memory tend to excel in reading comprehension, math, and problem-solving compared to peers with less efficient memory skills. Low working memory is...

Summary

Adolescents with normal hearing but communication issues can show signs of auditory processing disorder (APD). Further research is needed for better diagnostic tools for APD in this age group.

Area of Science:

  • Audiology
  • Developmental Psychology
  • Special Education

Background:

  • Specialized vocational training units (BBW) in Germany serve adolescents with special needs.
  • BBW Leipzig observes an increase in adolescents with auditory processing disorder (APD).
  • Limited diagnostic tools exist for APD in this age demographic.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate auditory processing in adolescents with normal hearing but communication impairments.
  • To assess the applicability of existing diagnostic materials for APD in this population.

Main Methods:

  • Included 35 normal-hearing adolescents (mean age 18.1 years) from BBW Leipzig.
  • Assessed dichotic listening, speech-in-noise understanding, accelerated speech, and phoneme differentiation.
  • Evaluated non-verbal intelligence, concentration, figural retentivity, and linguistic abilities.

Main Results:

  • 25 participants exhibited conspicuous results related to APD.
  • 5 participants had no prior APD diagnosis.
  • 9 participants showed APD indicators without top-down disorder signs, struggling with auditory information access and working memory despite normal/above-average cognitive skills.

Conclusions:

  • Adolescents can meet APD criteria without a prior childhood diagnosis.
  • Multi-professional diagnostics are crucial for APD assessment beyond childhood.
  • There is a need for standardized tests with age-appropriate norms for APD diagnosis.
