Background:

  • Colpocephaly is characterized by enlarged occipital horns of the lateral ventricles, reflecting a persistent fetal configuration.
  • This condition has been previously associated with various brain abnormalities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the frequency of colpocephaly at our institution.
  • To identify associated brain malformations in cases of colpocephaly.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 3,411 computed tomographic (CT) scans performed over a 26-month period.
  • Identification of cases exhibiting the characteristic ventricular enlargement of colpocephaly.

Main Results:

  • Fourteen cases of colpocephaly were identified.
  • Agenesis of the corpus callosum was the most common associated malformation found.

Conclusions:

  • Colpocephaly appears to be a marker of abnormal brain development.
  • Insults during the first trimester of gestation (one to four months) may lead to colpocephaly.
