Implementing a comprehensive scholarly activity (SA) curriculum, including a peer leader, significantly boosted resident presentations. A similar curriculum without a peer leader showed no improvement in SA.

Background:

  • Scholarly activity (SA) is a core requirement for family medicine residents.
  • Engaging residents in SA presents a consistent challenge in graduate medical education.

Observation:

  • A novel curriculum at Naval Hospital Jacksonville Family Medicine Residency (NHJ) dramatically increased resident SA.
  • This study aimed to replicate the NHJ curriculum in two additional family medicine residency programs.

Findings:

  • The program implementing all three interventions (workshop, guide, peer leader) saw a 302% increase in resident conference presentations.
  • The program that omitted the resident peer leader component showed no significant change in SA.

Implications:

  • A resident peer research leader appears crucial for the success of SA curricula.
  • Further multi-site implementation is recommended to assess the generalizability of these findings in family medicine residency programs.
