Journal of voice : official journal of the Voice Foundation·2020

A new mini-microsuture technique for vocal fold surgery minimizes tissue trauma and prevents voice impairment. This cost-effective method improves postoperative anatomical structure for symmetrical vibration, enhancing voice quality.

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Microsurgery
  • Vocal Fold Pathology

Background:

  • Phonomicrolaryngeal surgery treats benign vocal fold disorders.
  • Postoperative scarring can impair voice quality due to mucosal hypodynamia.
  • A novel endolaryngeal suture technique is evaluated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present the outcomes of a new endolaryngeal suture technique.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of the mini-microsuture technique in vocal fold surgery.
  • To assess the impact on postoperative tissue healing and voice quality.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 144 patients undergoing phonomicrosurgery with the mini-microsuture technique (Jan 2018-Dec 2019).
  • Endolaryngeal microscopic suturation using the mini-microsuture technique.

  • Videolaryngoscopic assessment of tissue healing (suture elimination, scar status, wave pattern) at 1 and 4 weeks postoperatively.
  • Main Results:

    • 144 patients (57 males, 87 females) with mean age 40.61 years underwent the procedure.
    • 41.66% had multiple lesions, 58.33% had single lesions.
    • 63.88% had bilateral vocal fold lesions, 36.22% had unilateral lesions.

    Conclusions:

    • The mini-microsuture technique is simple, effective, and minimizes tissue trauma.
    • It prevents mucosal hypodynamia and promotes symmetrical vocal fold vibration.
    • The technique is cost-effective, does not significantly prolong operation time, and improves postoperative anatomical structure.
