Background:

Registered Nurses transition to clinical facilitator roles to supervise nursing students.
Limited research exists on clinical facilitator capabilities and validated assessment tools.

Purpose of the Study:

To validate the Capabilities of Nurse Educator (CONE) questionnaire for expert clinical facilitators.
To assess Australian clinical facilitator capabilities using a modified CONE.

Main Methods:

Cross-sectional survey design.
Purposive sampling of 235 Australian clinical facilitators.
Online questionnaire administration and statistical analysis.

Main Results:

The modified CONE retained 93 items and six subscales after minor revisions.
81 participants completed the survey.
Identified strengths in supporting student learning and lifelong learning, with noted gaps in leadership and research capabilities.

Conclusions:

The modified CONE is a suitable tool for self-assessment and identifying professional development needs of clinical facilitators.
Findings will inform the design of targeted professional development programs for educators in clinical settings.
