Intramedullary limb lengthening in pediatric patients shows excellent results and high satisfaction. This study confirms the safety and efficacy of motorized nail devices for leg length discrepancies.
Area of Science:
- Orthopedic surgery
- Pediatric orthopedics
- Biomechanical engineering
Background:
- Intramedullary motorized devices are increasingly used for limb lengthening.
- Limited literature exists on their application in pediatric and adolescent populations.
- This study evaluates outcomes in 50 consecutive pediatric/adolescent cases.
Purpose of the Study:
- To review the outcomes of intramedullary lower limb lengthening in pediatric and adolescent patients.
- To assess the accuracy, reliability, and clinical results of motorized intramedullary nails.
- To evaluate patient-reported outcomes and complications.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective review of 50 consecutive pediatric/adolescent cases (2013-2019).
- Use of PRECICE and STRYDE intramedullary lengthening nails.
- Data collected on nail performance, bone healing, functional recovery, and complications.
Main Results:
- 50 cases performed in 42 patients (mean age 15 years) with a mean discrepancy of 49mm.
- Mean achieved lengthening was 46.5mm with 96% nail accuracy and 90% reliability.
- Favorable ASAMI scores, high patient satisfaction (PROMS), and no significant complications observed.
Conclusions:
- Intramedullary lengthening demonstrates excellent clinical outcomes and high patient satisfaction in pediatric/adolescent populations.
- Thorough preoperative planning, patient education, and a multidisciplinary approach are recommended.
- Motorized intramedullary nails are a safe and effective option for pediatric limb lengthening.
