Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of immune mechanisms in the development of SPCs.
  • To explore associations between first primary cancers (FPCs) and SPCs in an immune-suppressed context.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized the Swedish Cancer Registry (1990-2015).
  • Analyzed relative risks (RRs) for concordant and discordant FPC-SPC pairs for 13 male and 14 female cancers associated with immune suppression.
  • Employed hierarchical clustering of RRs.

Main Results:

  • Excessive concordant risks for nasal, tongue/mouth, and lip cancers were observed in both sexes.
  • Skin cancer, tongue/mouth cancers, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma showed bidirectional FPC-SPC associations.
  • Nasal cancer and chronic lymphocytic leukemia were primarily FPCs, while liver and kidney cancers were mainly SPCs.

Conclusions:

  • Immune dysfunction is a plausible contributing factor for many observed cancer associations.
  • Experimental verification is recommended to confirm the role of immune mechanisms in SPC development.
