Background:

The acquisition of ongoing sound change in adult language learners remains poorly understood.
Key questions involve whether adoption begins in speech production or perception and its temporal dynamics.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the production and perception of an ongoing Dutch vowel shift in sociolinguistic migrants.
To examine individual differences in the adoption of linguistic innovations.

Main Methods:

A large-scale laboratory study (106 participants) involving production (word-list reading) and perception (rhyme decision) tasks.
Comparison of data from Dutch (Netherlands) and Belgian (Belgium) control groups with Belgian "sociolinguistic migrants" in the Netherlands.
Analysis using mixed-effects models to account for group and individual variations.

Main Results:

Group-level production data showed migrants falling between Dutch and Belgian norms.
Individual-level analysis revealed significant variation in adoption among migrants.
Perception data mirrored production trends at the group level, with individual perception and production differences correlating.

Findings support and extend previous research on the mechanisms of language change propagation.
