Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is a structured, time-limited therapeutic approach initially developed to treat depression. It integrates key concepts from psychodynamic, humanistic, and cognitive-behavioral therapies, making it a uniquely eclectic framework. The therapy is rooted in the interpersonal theories of Adolph Meyer and Harry Stack Sullivan, as well as John Bowlby's attachment theory, and focuses on the interplay between interpersonal relationships and emotional well-being.

Introduction to Psychological Disorders

815
Abnormal behavior, often referred to as mental illness, results from changes in brain function that influence thought patterns, behaviors, and social interactions. Psychologists and psychiatrists typically assess abnormal behavior using three primary criteria: deviance, maladaptation, and personal distress, particularly when these traits persist over long periods.
Deviant Behavior
Deviance in behavior refers to actions or thought patterns that significantly diverge from societal norms or...

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Psychology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Internally displaced persons (IDPs) face significant mental health challenges.
  • Mental disorders in IDPs can stem from trauma and displacement, often manifesting as anxiety and depression.
  • Early detection and intervention are crucial for preventing chronicity and improving adaptation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and evaluate a psychoeducational program (PP) for the timely detection, prevention, and management of mental disorders in IDPs.
  • To assess the effectiveness of the PP in enhancing psychological adaptation and quality of life.
  • To understand the heterogeneity of mental health conditions among IDPs.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 414 internally displaced persons (IDPs) participated in the study.
  • Utilized clinical-psychopathological, psychometric, psychodiagnostic, and statistical methods.
  • Assessed factors of psychic traumatization (FPT) dynamically, including gender-specific impacts.

Main Results:

  • IDPs were categorized into three groups: conditionally healthy (53.86%), at-risk (20.05%), and with diagnosed disorders (26.09%).
  • Anxiety-depressive spectrum disorders were predominant in the diagnosed group.
  • The psychoeducational program significantly improved psychological adaptation, reduced stress and anxiety, and enhanced quality of life.

Conclusions:

  • The developed psychoeducational program is effective in addressing the mental health needs of IDPs.
  • The PP facilitates early detection, prevention of chronicity, and improved adaptive capabilities.
  • Targeted interventions are essential for mitigating the mental health impact of displacement and trauma.
