CNS Depressants: Alcohol and Nicotine01:27

CNS Depressants: Alcohol and Nicotine

788
Ethanol, a clear colorless alcohol, has been consumed by humans for millennia, but its effects on the body are far from benign. At lower doses, it induces decreased inhibitions and loquaciousness, leading to its social appeal. However, it can cause severe consequences at higher doses, such as coma and respiratory depression, due to its zero-order elimination kinetics. Chronic ethanol abuse wreaks havoc on multiple organ systems, particularly the CNS and the liver. Abrupt cessation of ethanol...

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)

607
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) serves as the primary classification system for mental health disorders, providing standardized diagnostic criteria for clinicians and researchers. First published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) in 1952, the DSM has undergone several revisions to reflect evolving psychiatric understanding. The fifth edition, DSM-5, released in 2013, introduced key updates that expanded diagnostic categories and modified diagnostic...

Depressants

273
Depressant drugs, including alcohol and sedative-hypnotics, diminish central nervous system activity by enhancing the action of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that reduces brain activity and promotes relaxation. These substances can have various therapeutic uses but also pose significant risks, especially when misused or combined.
Alcohol is a common depressant that can induce a sense of relaxation and reduced inhibition at low doses. Contrary to its occasional...

Substance Use Disorders Affecting Sleep01:24

Substance Use Disorders Affecting Sleep

300
Substance use disorders involve a pattern of using drugs more extensively than intended and continuing use despite harmful consequences. This includes legal substances like alcohol and nicotine, as well as illegal drugs. These disorders often involve both physical and psychological dependence, reflecting compulsive use of substances that significantly alter thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, contributing to a major public health issue.
Understanding the concepts of physical dependence,...

Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques IV

145
Stress often leads to unhealthy habits like smoking, excessive drinking, and overeating, which offer short-term relief but ultimately increase long-term health risks. These behaviors create a cycle that temporarily lowers stress levels but can result in severe long-term health consequences. Breaking these habits is essential to reduce the risk of chronic diseases and improve overall well-being. Three primary changes that support better health include quitting smoking, reducing alcohol intake,...

Alcohols from Carbonyl Compounds: Reduction

11.6K
Reduction is a simple strategy to convert a carbonyl group to a hydroxyl group. The three major pathways to reduce carbonyls to alcohols are catalytic hydrogenation, hydride reduction, and borane reduction.
Catalytic hydrogenation is similar to the reduction of an alkene or alkyne by adding H2 across the pi bond in the presence of transition metal catalysts like Raney Ni, Pd–C, Pt, or Ru. Aldehydes and ketones can be reduced by this method, often under mild to moderate heat (25–100°C) and...

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Public Health
  • Addiction Science

Background:

  • Limited data exists on educational interventions for alcohol use disorder (AUD) stigma.
  • Students need preparation to address the personal and societal burden of AUD.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate an interprofessional symposium's effect on AUD knowledge and stigma.
  • To guide the development of future educational strategies for AUD.

Main Methods:

  • An interprofessional symposium covered AUD pharmacology, diagnosis, and treatment.
  • Participants completed pre- and post-symposium surveys on AUD knowledge and stigma.
  • Responses were categorized as low/high stigma or understanding; changes were analyzed using Wilcoxon signed-ranked test.

Main Results:

  • 87 pre- and 45 post-symposium responses were analyzed.
  • Significant increases in understanding of AUD as a disease were observed.
  • Significant decreases in stigma associated with AUD were reported (Z=3 to 5, P<.05).

Conclusions:

  • The symposium effectively improved attitudes toward alcohol use disorder.
  • Educational interventions can positively impact AUD perception.
  • This model can inform future AUD education.
