Area of Science:

  • Photonics and Optoelectronics
  • Integrated Circuit Design

Background:

  • Traditional large integrated photodiodes (PD) face limitations in optical read-out sensitivity.
  • Existing methods for improving PD sensitivity often require complex modifications or compensation techniques.

Discussion:

  • A novel 'divide-and-conquer' technique is proposed, segmenting large PDs into multiple smaller units.
  • Each segmented PD unit is connected to a dedicated transimpedance amplifier (TIA), with outputs combined for signal processing.

Key Insights:

  • This approach significantly enhances signal-to-noise ratio compared to conventional methods.
  • An increase of 7.9 dBm in sensitivity and 8.7 dBΩ in transimpedance was demonstrated with 16 parallel paths.
  • The technique offers substantial improvements without additional complex modifications or compensation.

Outlook:

  • The proposed method is compatible with any transimpedance amplifier (TIA) design and fabrication process.
  • This technique is adaptable to various technologies that allow photodiode integration.
  • Future work may explore further optimization of segmentation and amplification strategies for even greater sensitivity gains.
