We developed an energy-efficient thermo-optic tunable micro-ring resonator using thin-film lithium niobate. Thermal insulation trenches drastically improve tuning efficiency, enabling high-performance reconfigurable photonic devices.

    Area of Science:

    • Photonics
    • Materials Science
    • Optical Engineering

    Background:

    • Thermo-optic (TO) devices are crucial for reconfigurable photonic circuits.
    • Conventional TO devices often suffer from high power consumption and low tuning efficiency.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To demonstrate a high-efficiency thermo-optic tunable micro-ring resonator.
    • To improve the tuning efficiency and reduce power consumption in TO devices.

    Main Methods:

    • Fabrication of a micro-ring resonator using thin-film lithium niobate.
    • Integration of thermal insulation trenches around the resonator and substrate.
    • Characterization of the device's thermal tuning performance and power consumption.
