This study measured nursing student perceptions of incivility and tested interventions. Findings show interventions improved perceptions and validated the Nursing Student Perception of Civil and Uncivil Behaviors (NSPCUB) tool.
Area of Science:
- Nursing Education
- Healthcare Professionalism
- Clinical Learning Environments
Background:
- Incivility among nursing professionals is a recognized issue.
- Evidence-based interventions to address nursing incivility are limited.
- Understanding student perceptions is crucial for a positive learning environment.
Purpose of the Study:
- To measure nursing student perceptions of incivility in clinical settings.
- To evaluate the effectiveness of interventions designed to improve these perceptions.
- To further validate the reliability of the Nursing Student Perception of Civil and Uncivil Behaviors (NSPCUB) tool.
Main Methods:
- The NSPCUB tool was administered to 314 nursing students.
- Interventions were developed based on initial survey data.
- The NSPCUB tool was re-administered to 410 students post-intervention.
Main Results:
- A statistically significant increase in positive perceptions was observed for 7 out of 12 survey items.
- Interventions demonstrated a positive impact on nursing student perceptions of incivility.
- The NSPCUB tool was confirmed as a highly reliable instrument for measuring these perceptions.
Conclusions:
- The NSPCUB tool is a valuable instrument for nurse executives.
- It can be utilized to assess incivility perceptions and guide improvement strategies.
- The study supports the implementation of targeted interventions to foster a more civil clinical learning environment.
