Area of Science:

  • Biomechanics
  • Motor Control
  • Human Movement Science

Background:

  • Movement variability aids adaptation to changing conditions.
  • Reduced coordination variability is observed in patient populations and with muscle fatigue.
  • Newer Ellipse Area Method (EAM) offers an alternative to the Vector Coding (VC) method for quantifying variability.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate how fatiguing exercise affects trunk-pelvis coordination variability during walking turns.
  • To compare the efficacy of the Vector Coding (VC) and Ellipse Area Method (EAM) in quantifying these changes.

Main Methods:

  • 15 young adults performed walking turns before and after paraspinal muscle fatigue.
  • 3D motion capture analyzed trunk and pelvis kinematics.
  • Stride-to-stride coordination variability was calculated using both VC and EAM methods.

Main Results:

  • Trunk-pelvis coordination variability significantly decreased after fatiguing exercise.
  • This reduction was observed across the stride cycle and during the stance phase.
  • Variability measures from VC and EAM were highly correlated (0.81–0.98).

Conclusions:

  • Fatiguing exercise reduces trunk-pelvis coordination variability in healthy individuals.
  • The temporal stride cycle distribution of variability remains consistent.
  • The observed changes in coordination variability are robust regardless of the quantification method used.
