Summary
Mindfulness was linked to increased COVID-19 preventive behaviors. However, only social distancing showed a unique association with mindfulness after considering other factors. This highlights mindfulness for future infectious disease prevention efforts.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Public Health
- Behavioral Science
Background:
- The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated widespread adoption of preventive health behaviors.
- Individual adherence to these recommendations varied significantly.
- Mindfulness, previously linked to health-promoting behaviors, was unexplored in relation to pandemic-specific preventive actions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between mindfulness and adherence to recommended COVID-19 preventive health behaviors.
- To determine if mindfulness uniquely predicts engagement in these behaviors, controlling for demographic, personality, and health risk factors.
Main Methods:
- A national U.S. sample (N=353) completed an online survey assessing mindfulness and frequency of performing key COVID-19 preventive behaviors.
- Behaviors included avoiding face touching, handwashing, surface disinfection, social distancing, and self-quarantining.
- Statistical analyses controlled for demographic variables, health risk, and personality traits.
Main Results:
- Mindfulness was significantly correlated with greater engagement in all assessed COVID-19 preventive behaviors.
- After controlling for covariates, mindfulness was uniquely associated only with social distancing.
- This suggests mindfulness may play a specific role in adherence to social distancing measures.
Conclusions:
- Mindfulness is an individual characteristic associated with engagement in COVID-19 preventive health behaviors.
- Its unique predictive value is most evident for social distancing.
- Findings can inform targeted interventions to enhance adherence to public health recommendations during infectious disease outbreaks.

Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques I
185
Stress prevention and management are crucial for maintaining well-being and building resilience. Techniques to manage stress include cultivating qualities like conscientiousness, a sense of personal control, and self-efficacy. Healthcare Associated Infections II: Preventive Measures
3.4K
Essential infection prevention measures are based on the knowledge of the infection chain, the modes of transmission in healthcare settings, and the use of the best practices in all healthcare settings. Compulsory public reporting of healthcare-associated infection rates is needed to allow individuals and the community to make informed choices regarding selecting a healthcare facility.

Levels of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention
13.9K
Health promotion allows a person to control the determinants of health, resulting in an improved health status. It enhances the quality of life and reduces premature deaths. Health promotion and illness prevention programs help people make beneficial choices to reduce the risk of disease and disabilities. There are three health promotion and illness prevention levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention.

Preparedness and Phobias
229
Human fear responses to certain stimuli, such as darkness, heights, deep water, and blood, can often arise despite the absence of direct negative experiences. This phenomenon is rooted in evolutionary psychology, which posits that humans have developed a predisposition to fear stimuli that historically posed significant survival threats. This predisposition, known as preparedness, suggests that early humans who developed a fear of potentially dangerous entities, such as venomous snakes and...

Preventive Healthcare Services
1.5K
Preventive healthcare services keep people healthy via frequent check-ups, screening, and counseling. They primarily aid in disease prevention rather than treating an acute or chronic illness. Preventive treatment also keeps individuals productive and energetic, allowing them to work well into their retirement years. Examples of preventive care services include:
