  • To identify and assess the key risk factors associated with the development of anterior open bite (AOB).

  • A case-control study involving 96 patients aged 8-14 years, utilizing lateral cephalometric radiographs.
  • Participants were categorized into case (AOB presence) and control (AOB absence) groups, matched for age and gender.
  • Binary logistic regression analysis was employed to determine the statistical significance of risk factors at a 5% level.

Main Results:

  • Deleterious oral habits, specifically tongue interposition during deglutition, were significantly associated with AOB (Odds Ratio = 10.51).
  • A dolichofacial (long and narrow) facial pattern presented a significantly higher risk for AOB (Odds Ratio = 5.74).
  • Mouth breathing showed no significant association with the occurrence of AOB (P = 0.151).

Conclusions:

  • Tongue interposition during swallowing and a dolichocephalic facial pattern are identified as significant risk factors for developing anterior open bite.
  • These findings provide crucial insights for the early diagnosis and prevention of AOB in pediatric populations.
