Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of the eight-week Mindfulness in Motion (MIM) intervention on burnout, resilience, stress, and work engagement.
  • To assess changes in interprofessional healthcare faculty and students participating in the MIM program.
  • To determine if MIM can be an effective strategy for improving well-being in a large academic health center.

Main Methods:

  • A single-arm, pre-post intervention study was conducted with 267 interprofessional HCPs (including resident physicians, chaplains, attending physicians, faculty, and administrative staff).
  • Participants engaged in the eight-week multimodal, evidenced-based, onsite Mindfulness in Motion (MIM) program.
  • Standardized measures including the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), Connor Davidson Resiliency Scale (CDRS), Utrecht Work Engagement Score (UWES), and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) were used.

Main Results:

  • A significant 27% reduction in participants meeting burnout criteria was observed.
  • Significant pre-post decreases were noted in emotional exhaustion (p < .00001) and depersonalization (p < .001), with a significant increase in personal accomplishment (p < .00001).
  • Resilience (p < .00001), work engagement (p < .00001), and a decrease in perceived stress (p < .00001) were all significantly improved.

Conclusions:

  • The Mindfulness in Motion (MIM) program effectively reduced burnout and perceived stress among interprofessional HCPs.
  • MIM significantly enhanced resilience and work engagement within a large healthcare system.
  • These findings support the use of mindfulness interventions as an organizational strategy to empower HCPs and mitigate challenges, particularly in response to crises like COVID-19.
