This study systematically reviewed literature to identify essential competencies for training cardiac surgery residents in transcatheter cardiovascular procedures. The findings provide a foundation for developing effective transcatheter training curricula.
Area of Science:
- Cardiovascular Surgery
- Medical Education
- Interventional Cardiology
Background:
- Transcatheter procedures are a growing priority for cardiac surgeons and trainees.
- Optimal training methods for these complex procedures during residency are not yet established.
Purpose of the Study:
- To systematically review existing literature on transcatheter cardiovascular procedures.
- To identify core competencies required for surgical residents learning these techniques.
- To develop a preliminary list of competencies for transcatheter training programs.
Main Methods:
- A comprehensive scoping review of MEDLINE, Scopus, and ERIC databases was performed.
- Literature published up to April 1, 2020, without date or type limitations, was included.
- Identified competencies were organized and categorized.
Main Results:
- 33 sources published between 2006 and 2020 were included from 1456 retrieved sources.
- The review identified 400 items organized into 97 distinct competencies.
- Included publications comprised comparative studies, societal statements, surveys, opinion articles, editorials, simulator descriptions, and a narrative review.
Conclusions:
- Evidence exists regarding the competencies needed for performing transcatheter cardiovascular procedures.
- The identified competencies can inform the development of curricula for training cardiac surgery residents.
- This systematic review provides a valuable resource for establishing standardized transcatheter training paradigms.
