Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate how drivers' perceptions of worker injury and vehicle damage likelihoods affect their speed decisions in work zones.
  • To identify demographic and situational factors influencing speeding behavior in road work zones.

Main Methods:

  • An online survey of 405 drivers in Queensland, Australia, was conducted using images of 12 work zones.
  • Driver-nominated speeds and perceived risks of worker injury and vehicle damage were collected.
  • Regression analyses were used to examine factors influencing driver speeds and speeding likelihood.

Main Results:

  • Perceived risks of worker injury and vehicle damage strongly correlated with nominated driver speeds (p < 0.001).
  • Younger and middle-aged drivers, and those with truck licenses, tended to nominate higher speeds.
  • Lower speeds were observed at road curves, with unpaved adjacent areas, and when workers were visible.

Conclusions:

  • Driver perceptions of injury and damage risks are critical in determining work zone speeds.
  • Interventions focusing on increasing drivers' awareness of potential vehicle damage could help moderate speeds in roadworks.
