    Summary

This study compared ionization camera, silicon (Si), and diamond detectors for measuring radiation dose fields. Diamond and Si detectors closely matched ionization camera data for photon radiation, but Si detectors overestimated electron radiation dose.

    Area of Science:

    • Medical Physics
    • Radiation Dosimetry

    Background:

    • Accurate measurement of radiation dose fields is crucial for effective radiotherapy.
    • Different detectors, including ionization chambers, silicon (Si) detectors, and diamond detectors, are used for this purpose.
    • Understanding their performance characteristics is essential for reliable dosimetry.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the performance of ionization chambers, Si detectors, and diamond detectors in measuring dose fields.
    • To evaluate the accuracy of these detectors for both photon and electron radiation beams.

    Main Methods:

    • Measurements of dose fields were conducted using an ionization chamber, a Si detector, and a diamond detector.
    • These detectors were alternately connected to a CADSCAN dose field analyzer.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Data were analyzed for photon and electron radiation at various energies (18 MeV for photons, 4, 17, and 20 MeV for electrons).
  • Main Results:

    • For 18 MeV photon radiation, data from diamond and Si detectors showed good agreement with the ionization chamber.
    • For electron radiation (4, 17, and 20 MeV), diamond detector measurements closely matched absorbed dose distributions derived from ionization measurements.
    • Si detectors, however, yielded significantly overestimated dose accumulation values for electron radiation.

    Conclusions:

    • Diamond detectors demonstrate reliable performance for measuring electron radiation dose fields, aligning well with ionization-based calculations.
    • Si detectors may overestimate dose accumulation, particularly for electron beams, necessitating careful consideration in clinical applications.
    • Ionization chambers remain a benchmark, with diamond detectors showing comparable accuracy for specific radiation types.
