Open Angle Glaucoma: Treatment01:27

Open Angle Glaucoma: Treatment

822
In open-angle glaucoma, the iridocorneal angle remains open, but the trabecular meshwork becomes stiff, slowing down the outflow of aqueous humor. This causes a buildup of aqueous humor in the anterior chamber, leading to a sudden increase in intraocular pressure. The treatment for open-angle glaucoma focuses on reducing the elevated intraocular pressure by either decreasing the secretion of aqueous humor or increasing its outflow.

Glaucoma: Overview

1.1K
Glaucoma is an eye condition characterized by increased intraocular pressure that damages the retina and optic nerve, leading to irreversible blindness if left untreated. The human eye has various components, including the cornea, iris, pupil, lens, and optic nerve. Aqueous humor is secreted by the epithelium of the ciliary body in the posterior chamber and flows through the trabecular meshwork and canal of Schlemm, maintaining normal intraocular pressure. The trabecular meshwork and the canal...

Angle Closure Glaucoma: Treatment

949
Angle-closure glaucoma, or closed-angle glaucoma, is an eye condition where the iris bulges out and blocks the iridocorneal angle, resulting in a buildup of aqueous humor and increased intraocular pressure. Immediate medical attention is necessary due to the sudden onset of symptoms. The treatment for angle-closure glaucoma includes short-term and long-term approaches. Short-term treatment involves using eye drops like pilocarpine to lower intraocular pressure by increasing aqueous humor...

Summary

Serum selenium levels did not differ between German primary open-angle glaucoma patients and controls. However, age and gender significantly affected selenium levels, with distinct patterns observed in men and women.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Trace Element Research
  • Neurodegenerative Disease Studies

Background:

  • Oxidative stress is implicated in glaucoma pathogenesis.
  • Serum selenium (Se) levels are linked to glaucoma and vary globally.
  • Investigating Se levels in a German population is crucial due to nutritional and ethnic differences.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine serum selenium levels in German primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) patients and controls.
  • To analyze potential age and gender influences on serum Se levels in this cohort.

Main Methods:

  • Serum samples from 39 individuals (22 POAG patients, 17 controls) were analyzed using ICP-sf-MS.
  • Statistical analyses included covariance and percentile regression.
  • Age and gender were assessed as confounding factors and their trends with Se levels were investigated.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in total serum Se levels was found between POAG patients and controls (p > 0.05).
  • Significant effects of age and gender on serum Se levels were observed.
  • Quantile analysis revealed that lower Se levels correlated with increased age in POAG patients, unlike controls.

Conclusions:

  • German cohort serum Se levels were approximately half those reported in a US cohort.
  • Serum Se levels increased with age in women (both controls and POAG patients).
  • Serum Se levels decreased with age in men (both controls and POAG patients).
