    Background:

    • Accurate facial measurements are crucial in various medical and forensic applications.
    • Digital facial scanning offers potential advantages over traditional manual methods.
    • Evaluating the accuracy of digital techniques and superimposition methods is essential.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the trueness and precision of conventional versus digital facial measurements.
    • To assess the accuracy of different superimposition techniques for 3D facial scans.

    Main Methods:

    • Twenty volunteers participated in the study.
    • Facial landmarks were measured manually (caliper) and digitally (Geomagic software).
    • Facial scans were superimposed using full face, face without eyes, and bone-supported areas to calculate root mean square (RMS) differences.

    Main Results:

    • Trueness between conventional and digital measurements was 1,151.75 ± 1,265.52 μm; precision was 322.31 ± 300.54 μm.
    • RMS differences were 334.15 ± 172.07 (full face), 339.57 ± 173.13 (face without eyes), and 385.65 ± 182.29 (bone-supported areas).
    • Bone-supported area superimposition showed statistically significant differences compared to the other methods.

    Conclusions:

    • While statistically significant differences exist, they are below clinical thresholds.
    • Superimposition using the full face or face without eyes yielded fewer discrepancies than bone-supported areas.
    • Higher discrepancies were observed in the lower third of the face.
