Disorders of the Female Reproductive System01:24

Disorders of the Female Reproductive System

3.6K
The female reproductive system can be affected by several disorders, including Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS), Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), endometriosis, and various forms of cancer. PMS and PMDD are cyclical conditions that cause physical and emotional distress, with symptoms that include edema, mood swings, and food cravings. PMDD is a more severe form of PMS characterized by increased symptom severity that peaks during the luteal phase and tends to improve or resolve shortly after...

Myocarditis II: Clinical Features and Diagnostic Tests

96
Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle. The symptoms vary widely, encompassing asymptomatic presentations to severe, acute manifestations.Clinical PresentationAsymptomatic cases: In some instances, myocarditis may be asymptomatic, with the infection resolving without intervention. These cases often go undetected unless discovered incidentally through diagnostic imaging or tests conducted for other reasons.General Early Symptoms: Early symptoms of myocarditis are non-specific and can...

Summary

Meigs syndrome, a rare condition, can mimic ovarian cancer. This case highlights the importance of pathological evaluation for accurate diagnosis, even with elevated cancer antigen 125 (CA-125) levels and imaging suggestive of malignancy.

Area of Science:

  • Gynecologic Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Pelvic mass, ascites, and pleural effusions are concerning symptoms that can indicate advanced ovarian carcinoma.
  • Elevated cancer antigen 125 (CA-125) levels further increase suspicion for gynecologic malignancies.

Observation:

  • A 64-year-old woman presented with a large pelvic mass, ascites, and bilateral pleural effusions, with a markedly elevated CA-125 level.
  • Imaging revealed multiple pelvic masses, raising strong suspicion for ovarian cancer.

Findings:

  • Surgical pathology confirmed a large ovarian fibroma (26 cm), diagnosing Meigs syndrome.
  • Post-operative resolution of ascites and pleural effusion supported the Meigs syndrome diagnosis.

Implications:

  • This case underscores that Meigs syndrome can present similarly to ovarian cancer, necessitating pathological confirmation.
  • Accurate diagnosis is crucial for appropriate management and avoiding unnecessary aggressive treatment for presumed ovarian malignancy.
