A pro-inflammatory diet is linked to a higher risk of developing ulcerative colitis (UC). This study found that individuals with UC were more likely to consume diets with a higher inflammatory potential.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Nutritional Science
- Epidemiology
Background:
- Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including ulcerative colitis (UC), has an inflammatory basis, yet the dietary inflammatory potential's role is understudied.
- Limited data exist on the association between dietary inflammatory potential and UC risk.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between the dietary inflammatory potential (IPD) score and the odds of developing ulcerative colitis (UC).
Main Methods:
- A case-control study involving 109 UC patients and 218 healthy controls from Iranian population-based studies.
- Dietary intake of 28 food items was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to calculate the IPD score.
- Statistical analyses, including logistic regression, were performed, adjusting for various demographic, lifestyle, and medical factors.
Main Results:
- Patients with UC had significantly higher odds of being in the highest quartile of the IPD score compared to controls (OR: 2.83; 95% CI: 1.41-5.69).
- The association remained significant after adjusting for age, sex, BMI, education, smoking, medical history, and physical activity (OR: 3.48; 95% CI: 1.32-9.10).
- The association was slightly attenuated but still significant when considering dietary habits (OR: 3.33; 95% CI: 1.20-9.20).
Conclusions:
- Adherence to a pro-inflammatory diet is positively associated with increased odds of ulcerative colitis.
- These findings suggest a potential link between diet and UC risk, warranting further investigation.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease I: Ulcerative Colitis
Inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD, encompasses a group of disorders characterized by chronic inflammation or ulceration of the gastrointestinal tract.
Risk Factors
The exact cause of IBD remains unclear, although it is believed to be due to a mix of genetic, environmental, microbial, and immune factors. Genetic factors are significant in determining susceptibility to IBD, with family history being a critical risk factor. Individuals with a first-degree relative who has IBD are at...

A colonoscopy is the definitive screening test, distinguishing ulcerative colitis from other colon diseases with similar symptoms. During a colonoscopy test, inflamed mucosa with exudate ulcerations can be observed, and biopsies are taken to determine the histologic characteristics of the...
Peptic Ulcer Disease I: Introduction
An acute ulcer, marked by superficial erosion and minimal inflammation, swiftly resolves upon identifying and addressing the underlying cause. In contrast, a chronic ulcer persists, potentially eroding through the muscular wall and forming fibrous tissue.
Peptic ulcers can also be...
Chronic Bowel Disorders: Introduction
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder affecting the gastrointestinal tract. The distinctive feature is recurrent abdominal pain associated with altered bowel movements, manifesting as constipation, diarrhea, or fluctuating between both. The...
Inflammatory Bowel Disease II: Crohn's Disease
Inflammatory bowel disease, commonly known as IBD, refers to a collection of disorders that lead to persistent inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. The two types of IBD are ulcerative colitis, which impacts the colon, and Crohn's disease, which can involve any part of the gastrointestinal segment.
Crohn's disease
Crohn's disease is a chronic, systemic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that predominantly affects the gastrointestinal tract. It is marked by...
