Background:

Limited stroke outcome data exists for Uganda.
Acute and subacute stroke present significant health challenges in the region.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine 30-day mortality outcomes for stroke patients at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH) in Uganda.
To identify risk factors associated with stroke mortality in this population.

Main Methods:

Prospective study of consecutive adult stroke patients from August 2014 to March 2015.
Head CT confirmed ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke.
Data collection included mortality, morbidity, risk factors, and imaging.

Main Results:

108 patients enrolled; 62% ischemic, 38% hemorrhagic stroke.
30-day mortality was 38.1%.
Significant mortality predictors: NIHSS score, female sex, anemia, HIV infection. Hemorrhagic stroke patients had higher NIHSS and mRS scores.

Conclusions:

Southwestern Uganda experiences a high 30-day stroke mortality rate of 38.1%.
NIHSS score, female sex, anemia, and HIV infection are identified as critical mortality predictors.
