Clinical Applications of Epidermal Stem Cells01:19

Clinical Applications of Epidermal Stem Cells

3.0K
Epidermal stem cells (EpiSCs) are mainly located at the basal layer of the epidermis. These cells repair minor injuries of the skin and replace dead skin cells. However, EpiSCs’ cannot heal severe wounds such as major burns or those from diabetes or hereditary disorders. In such cases, culturing the epidermal stem cells from the patient is possible and has yielded successful treatment options, such as laboratory-grown skin grafts. These grafts are synthesized using a patient’s own...

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Dermatology
  • Materials Science

Background:

  • Skin picking disorder (SPD), also known as dermatillomania, is a chronic neuropsychiatric condition.
  • It has an underestimated prevalence and significantly impacts health and quality of life.
  • Current behavioral and pharmacological treatments for SPD are often ineffective.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce SPD, detailing its prevalence, etiology, consequences, and diagnostic criteria.
  • To review existing treatment strategies for SPD.
  • To propose biomaterial-based physical barrier strategies as a novel therapeutic approach for SPD.

Main Methods:

  • Conducted literature searches in PubMed and Google Scholar.
  • Organized findings into categories: prevalence, etiology, consequences, diagnostic criteria, and treatment.
  • Specifically focused on alternative and biomaterial-based physical barrier strategies.

Main Results:

  • Identified six potential biomaterial products for physical barrier application in SPD treatment.
  • Highlighted SPD as a complex, underestimated disorder requiring more attention.
  • Noted the potential of biomaterials and nanosystems for SPD treatment.

Conclusions:

  • SPD requires increased focus regarding its treatment and care.
  • Biomaterial-based physical barriers show promise as supportive or alternative SPD therapies.
  • Further research into biomaterials, nanosystems, and wound healing strategies for SPD is warranted.
