Mobile health apps in China offer drug-drug interaction (DDI) checks. While most apps are high quality, some popular ones provide incorrect DDI information, posing a patient safety risk.
Area of Science:
- Health Informatics
- Mobile Health (mHealth)
- Drug Safety
Background:
- Computerized drug-drug interaction (DDI) alert systems are not widely used in China.
- Healthcare providers increasingly rely on mHealth apps for drug information, including DDIs.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the quality and content of mHealth apps for DDI checking available in Chinese app stores.
Main Methods:
- A systematic review identified mHealth apps with DDI checking features on Chinese iOS and Android platforms.
- Apps were evaluated using a multidimensional framework and the Mobile App Rating Scale (MARS).
- Data included general app information, scientific basis, accountability, and MARS scores; interrater agreement was assessed using Cohen kappa, Fleiss kappa, and Krippendorff alpha.
Main Results:
- Seven mHealth apps met the selection criteria; only three cited sources.
- Average MARS score was 3.69/5, with significant variation in the information section (1.41-4.60).
- Functionality scored highest (4.05), engagement lowest (3.16), and information quality averaged 3.42.
Conclusions:
- Most evaluated mHealth apps for DDI checking in China demonstrated good quality and accurate information.
- However, a few highly downloaded apps contained incorrect DDI information, posing a significant threat to patient safety.
- The study highlights the need for rigorous quality control of mHealth apps used in clinical practice.
