Summary

Collagen cross-linking is a safe and effective treatment for progressive keratoconus, improving visual acuity and maintaining corneal shape. This study shows positive results in patients with high keratometry values.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of collagen cross-linking for progressive keratoconus.
  • To assess outcomes in patients with keratometry (Kmax) of 50 diopters or higher.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 52 eyes over 12 months.
  • Measured visual acuity, keratometry, and corneal thickness pre- and post-treatment.
  • Utilized a Zeimer Galilei G6 system and followed the Dresden protocol.

Main Results:

  • Uncorrected visual acuity improved significantly (p=0.012).
  • Corneal thickness decreased slightly (p=0.004).
  • 94.2% of cases showed positive outcomes; visual acuity and tomography were largely maintained.

Conclusions:

  • Collagen cross-linking is safe for progressive keratoconus.
  • The treatment maintained visual acuity and corneal tomographic parameters at one year.
