Is white the right light for the clinical electrooculogram?

A blue monochromatic LED stimulus (448 nm) can replace bright white light for electrooculogram testing. This finding offers a more comfortable alternative for patients undergoing electrooculography (EOG) assessments.

- Electrooculograms were recorded from 23 healthy participants using the standard 100 cd.m⁻² white illuminant and four monochromatic LEDs (448 nm, 534 nm, 596 nm, 634 nm) at 30 cd.m⁻².
- Standardized pre-adaptation, dark adaptation, and recording procedures were employed using a Ganzfeld stimulator.
Main Results:
- The normalized light-peak to dark-trough (LP:DT) ratio for the 448 nm monochromatic LED was equivalent in amplitude and timing to the standard EOG white light stimulus.
- The LP:DT ratios were 2.49 ± 0.11 for white light and 2.47 ± 0.11 for the 448 nm LED, with no significant difference (p = .99).
- The time to light-peak was also comparable between the two stimuli.

- A short-wavelength monochromatic stimulus, specifically the 448 nm blue LED, demonstrates comparable performance to the standard white light for EOG.
- This monochromatic stimulus offers a potentially more comfortable and viable alternative for clinical electrooculogram testing.
