Skin cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when there is an abnormal growth of skin cells, usually triggered by damage to the DNA within the skin cells. Summary

Malignant struma ovarii survival is 72.5% progression-free and 91% overall. Non-papillary histology is an independent adverse prognostic factor for progression-free survival.

Background:

  • Malignant struma ovarii is a rare ovarian tumor with thyroid tissue.
  • Understanding its clinico-pathologic features is crucial for patient management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review malignant struma ovarii cases.
  • To identify clinico-pathologic features, treatment, prognostic factors, and survival outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature review of malignant struma ovarii from 1983-2020.
  • Evaluation of 178 identified cases.

Main Results:

  • Five-year progression-free survival (PFS) was 72.5%, and overall survival (OS) was 91%.
  • Younger age, larger tumor size, non-papillary histology, and lymphovascular invasion predicted poor PFS.
  • Radioactive iodine ablation (RIA) and combined surgery with RIA improved PFS, but only non-papillary histology was an independent prognostic factor for PFS.

Conclusions:

  • Papillary classic type is the most common subtype.
  • Histologic type other than classic papillary thyroid carcinoma is an independent adverse prognostic factor for PFS.
