- Healthcare communication
- Medical education
- Patient satisfaction
Background:
- Many healthcare professionals lack essential communication skills training (CST).
- Traditional single-workshop CST programs often fail to create lasting behavioral changes in clinical practice.
- Health systems are seeking effective methods to improve provider communication.
Purpose of the Study:
- To describe a provider CST program incorporating clinical coaching.
- To evaluate the impact of a CST program with coaching on patient satisfaction and provider confidence.
- To assess the effectiveness of coaching in reinforcing communication skills.
Main Methods:
- A pilot CST workshop was followed by a modified program including in-person clinical coaching for providers (physicians, physician assistants, advanced practice nurses).
- Coaching was provided 30 and 60 days post-workshop.
- Evaluation involved pre/post patient satisfaction scores and coaching evaluation surveys for 248 providers.
Main Results:
- Aggregated patient satisfaction Top Box ratings increased from 73.9% to 79.5% after the workshop plus coaching program.
- Providers reported increased confidence in applying CST skills in clinical practice.
- Coaching was rated positively by participants.
Conclusions:
- Coaching effectively facilitates and reinforces skills learned in CST workshops.
- Integrating coaching into CST programs can lead to measurable improvements in patient satisfaction.
- This blended approach supports meaningful skills transfer in healthcare communication.
