[Bacteriocinogenic properties of Proteus]
Abstract:
As revealed, bacteriocinogenia was widespread in bacteria of the Proteus genus (85 +/- 3.87%). Proteus cultures isolated from various sources failed to differ by the number of bacteriocinogenic cultures and by bacteriocinogenic activity. Bacteriocinogenic cultures were mostly revealed among the Proteius mirabilis strains.
Insights
Bacteriocin production is common in Proteus bacteria, with most strains showing this trait. This widespread bacteriocinogenia was observed across various Proteus species and sources, particularly in Proteus mirabilis.
Area of Science:
- Microbiology
- Bacteriology
Background:
- Bacteriocins are ribosomally synthesized antimicrobial peptides.
- The prevalence of bacteriocin production in the Proteus genus is not well-documented.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the prevalence of bacteriocinogenia in the Proteus genus.
- To determine if bacteriocinogenic activity varies among different Proteus isolates and sources.
Main Methods:
- Isolation and cultivation of Proteus bacteria from various sources.
- Assay of bacteriocinogenic activity in bacterial cultures.
Main Results:
- Bacteriocinogenia was detected in 85% of Proteus genus bacteria.
- No significant differences in bacteriocinogenic activity were found between cultures from different sources.
- Proteus mirabilis strains showed the highest prevalence of bacteriocinogenic cultures.
Conclusions:
- Bacteriocin production is a widespread characteristic of the Proteus genus.
- Proteus mirabilis is a significant producer of bacteriocins.
