Patient-centered Care01:13

Patient-centered Care

2.5K
Patient-centered care involves delivering care beyond inpatient hospitalization. Reflective practice can enhance a patient-centered approach. Reflective practice is a process of reasoning that considers all aspects of the present situation, including practicalities, learning from personal practice, and consideration of patient needs. Patients appreciate care decisions made while considering their input. Involving the patient in their care provides the patient with a sense of contribution rather...

Nursing Process for Patient and Caregiver Teaching II: Planning and Implementation

1.6K
Planning for learning involves the development of a teaching plan. Teaching plans are similar to nursing care plans—both follow the steps of the nursing process. Planning in the teaching process involves setting goals and outcomes. Here, goals identify what a patient needs to achieve to understand a healthcare topic better, whereas the outcomes are the action to be performed by the patient to achieve the goal within a timeframe. For example, if the goal is to educate the patient about...

Nursing Process for Patient and Caregiver Teaching I: Assessment and Diagnosis

2.0K
The nursing process provides a clinical decision-making framework for patients and families to establish and implement a personalized care plan. Since part of the nurse's duties is to teach patients, the steps of the nursing process are the most effective way to approach instruction. The nursing process and the teaching-learning process are inextricably linked.
It is critical to determine the patient's learning needs during the assessment. Determination of learning needs compounds data...

Critical Thinking I

4.1K
Critical thinking helps decision-making and allows nurses to recognize barriers to success and find solutions to possible issues. It helps to brainstorm and implement ideas to achieve goals. Critical thinking helps acknowledge and state workflow inefficiencies while improving management techniques. Nurses understand the value of critical thinking and look for fellow nurses with critical thinking skills to upgrade their professional standards. Critical thinking can advance a nurse's career...

Fundamentals of Nursing Process II

4.4K
There are several characteristics related to delivering nursing care. One vital characteristic of the nursing process is that it can be used to protect nurses and justify the provided care. Productive use of the nursing process requires the knowledge and skills of nurses to assess and solve issues. Nurses should develop and strengthen their critical thinking skills and evidence-based nursing interventions to improve their skills in formulating nursing care plans. A well-defined approach to...

Area of Science:

  • Pharmacy Education
  • Medical Education
  • Health Professions Education

Background:

  • Inclusive practice is essential in healthcare.
  • Pharmacy curricula need to foster skills for person-centred care.
  • Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) offer a novel approach to skill development.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the integration of 10 Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) sessions into the second year of a Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) program.
  • To assess the impact of VTS on students' development of skills and attitudes for inclusive practice.
  • To determine student perceptions of VTS session acceptability and skill transference.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study design.
  • Online reflective questionnaire administered to BPharm students (n=174) from two cohorts.
  • Analysis of closed- and free-text responses using descriptive statistics and inductive content analysis.

Main Results:

  • 56% of students consented to include their responses (n=98).
  • Students reported VTS supported development in person-centred communication, cultural competence, and critical thinking (min. 74.5% agreement).
  • 60% of participants applied VTS learning in other settings, with 86% advocating for VTS retention in the curriculum.

Conclusions:

  • Regular VTS sessions are acceptable to BPharm students.
  • VTS integration enhances affective learning experiences.
  • VTS is a valuable addition to pharmacy curricula, supporting inclusive, person-centred care skills.
