Summary

Normal eye protrusion in Iranians averages 16.3 mm, with the highest normal value at 20.1 mm. These exophthalmometry values are higher than Asians but lower than Caucasians.

Background:

  • Establishing reference exophthalmometry values is crucial for diagnosing orbital diseases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the normal range of eye protrusion (exophthalmometry) in the Iranian population.
  • To provide a basis for the assessment of orbital diseases in Iran.

Main Methods:

  • A meta-analysis was conducted on four studies published between 1995 and 2010.
  • Searched English and Farsi literature in PubMed, ISI Web of Knowledge, SID, and Iran Medex using keywords related to proptosis and exophthalmometry.
  • Statistical analysis performed using Stata 15.0 software on data from 3,696 subjects.

Main Results:

  • The average eye protrusion in the Iranian population was 16.3 mm (men: 16.5 mm, women: 16.2 mm).
  • No significant difference was found between left (16.3 mm) and right (16.4 mm) eye protrusion.
  • Teenagers (13-19 years) had a mean protrusion of 17.1 mm, while those 20 years and older had 16.3 mm.
  • The highest normal value, considering two standard deviations, was determined to be 20.1 mm.

Conclusions:

  • Normal eye protrusion values in Iranians are higher than those reported for Asian populations.
  • Normal eye protrusion values in Iranians are lower than those reported for Caucasian populations.
  • These findings establish essential reference values for exophthalmometry in Iran, aiding in clinical practice.
