Summary

This study shows a problem-solving worksheet effectively teaches individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to resolve social conflicts. Participants successfully used the tool and generalized skills to solve untrained conflicts independently.

Social conflict resolution is crucial for societal integration.
Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often face challenges in social conflict resolution.
Difficulties in this area can impede social interaction and relationships.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the efficacy of a problem-solving training intervention for individuals with ASD.
To evaluate the generalization of learned problem-solving skills to untrained social conflicts.
To determine if a structured worksheet can aid in resolving real-world social conflicts.

Main Methods:

A nonconcurrent multiple baseline across participants design was employed.
Three male participants with ASD were trained to use a problem-solving worksheet.
Training involved multiple exemplar training, error correction, rules, and reinforcement.

Main Results:

The problem-solving worksheet proved successful in resolving social conflicts in natural settings.
Participants demonstrated the ability to resolve untrained social conflicts without the worksheet.
The intervention facilitated the acquisition and application of conflict resolution strategies.

Conclusions:

Problem-solving training, utilizing a worksheet, is an effective intervention for social conflict resolution in ASD.
Generalization of skills to untrained situations indicates the robustness of the training.
This approach supports improved social functioning and integration for individuals with ASD.
