Self-prioritization depends on assumed task-relevance of self-association

The self-prioritization effect (SPE) occurs when self-associated stimuli are prioritized. This study found that SPE in a pseudo-word task depends on whether self-associations are perceived as task-relevant, not on pre-existing self-associations.
