Engaging K-12 teachers in open educational practices (OEP) improved their confidence and ease in using open educational resources (OER). While OEP did not significantly boost adoption intention, it highlighted benefits for OER integration in classrooms.
Area of Science:
- Educational Technology
- Curriculum Development
- Teacher Professional Development
Background:
- K-12 teachers require diverse instructional materials for personalized learning, a need amplified by COVID-19's shift to online education.
- Open Educational Resources (OER) offer cost-free, adaptable materials but face low adoption rates in K-12 settings.
- Effective strategies are crucial to enhance teacher intention for adopting OER.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate if engaging K-12 teachers in open educational practices (OEP), like renewable assignments, increases their acceptance of OER.
- To examine changes in factors influencing OER acceptance using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM).
Main Methods:
- A two-phase sequential explanatory mixed-method design was employed.
- Quantitative phase: Assessed factors influencing OER acceptance via TAM.
- Qualitative phase: Provided in-depth perspectives to supplement quantitative findings.
Main Results:
- Open educational practices (OEP) positively impacted teachers' perceived ease of use and self-efficacy regarding OER.
- Teachers' intention to implement OER did not show a significant increase.
- Qualitative data revealed benefits of OEP in promoting OER usage and suggested future directions.
Conclusions:
- OEP enhances teachers' confidence and perceived ease in utilizing OER, addressing key barriers to adoption.
- While direct intention to adopt OER wasn't significantly boosted, OEP offers a pathway to increased OER integration.
- Practical strategies are needed to leverage OEP for greater OER acceptance in K-12 curricula.
