Dermis
The dermis might be considered the "core" of the integumentary system, as distinct from the epidermis and hypodermis. It contains blood and lymph vessels, nerves, and other structures, such as hair follicles and sweat glands. The dermis is made of two layers of connective tissue that comprise an interconnected mesh of elastin and collagenous fibers, produced by fibroblasts.

Summary

A rare skin condition, linear organoid nevus, was identified in a Standard Schnauzer. This report details the second canine case and the first trial of retinoid therapy for this condition.

Background:

Linear organoid nevus is a rare skin neoplasm.
This is the second reported case in a canine patient.
Understanding its presentation and treatment is crucial for veterinary care.

Observation:

A female Standard Schnauzer presented with multiple, widespread hyperpigmented, hyperkeratotic plaques.
Lesions were distributed linearly or ovoidly across the head, neck, trunk, ears, and limbs.
Histopathology revealed severe hyperkeratosis, epidermal and follicular hyperplasia, and sebaceous hyperplasia.

Findings:

The canine case exhibited characteristic histopathological features of linear organoid nevus.
Systemic retinoid therapy demonstrated no clinical improvement in the affected dog.
This study marks the first investigation into retinoid therapy for canine linear organoid nevus.

Implications:

This case expands the understanding of linear organoid nevus in dogs.
The lack of response to retinoids suggests alternative therapeutic strategies may be needed.
Further research is warranted to explore effective treatments for this rare condition.
