Summary

The new Spinal Cord Independence Measure (SCIM IV) demonstrates excellent reliability and validity, comparable to its predecessor (SCIM III). This updated tool is suitable for international spinal cord injury research and clinical trials.

Background:

  • The Spinal Cord Independence Measure (SCIM) is a crucial tool for assessing functional status in individuals with spinal cord injuries.
  • Previous versions have established the SCIM's utility, necessitating evaluation of updates for continued relevance and accuracy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To rigorously assess the reliability and validity of the fourth version of the Spinal Cord Independence Measure (SCIM IV).
  • To compare the performance of SCIM IV against the established criterion standard, SCIM III.

Main Methods:

  • A partly blinded comparison was conducted between SCIM IV and SCIM III.
  • Data were collected from 648 participants with spinal cord injury across 19 units in 11 countries.
  • Assessments included SCIM IV and SCIM III on admission and before discharge.
