Internet pornography use (IPU) may not be a diagnosable addiction, but perceived addiction can cause distress. Addressing moral incongruence, rather than IPU itself, can resolve distress and problematic consumption.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Psychiatry
- Digital Health
Background:
- The concept of "pornography addiction" is debated, lacking consensus for a distinct diagnostic entity in international classifications.
- Despite scientific debate, individuals frequently seek therapy for perceived problematic internet pornography use (IPU).
- The term "pornography addiction" is prevalent in patient discourse, highlighting a gap between clinical recognition and public perception.
Observation:
- A case vignette of a man identifying as a "pornography addict" is presented for critical review.
- The study explores diagnostic hypotheses beyond the concept of addiction.
- Focus is placed on "perceived addiction" and its link to "moral incongruence".
Findings:
- A psychotherapeutic approach focusing on the patient's history, sexuality, and morality, rather than solely on IPU, is proposed.
- Therapy aimed to understand the construction of the patient's sexuality and moral framework.
- Addressing the root of moral incongruence, not the behavior itself, led to the cessation of IPU and associated suffering.
Implications:
- This approach suggests that for individuals perceiving "porn addiction," a comprehensive therapy exploring moral incongruence may be more effective than direct behavioral cessation.
- Understanding "perceived addiction" and its connection to personal values is crucial for therapeutic success.
- The findings advocate for a broader psychotherapeutic framework to address distress related to internet pornography consumption.
